Ms. O’Connor Retires After 52 Amazing Years of Teaching

After 24 wonderful years at Notre Dame Academy—and an incredible 52 years of teaching — Ms. Prudence O’Connor has officially retired! Ms. O’Connor actually started with us before we were even called Notre Dame Academy. Ten years before the inception of NDA, she was already shaping young minds at Immaculate Heart of Mary School. She’s been a steady, guiding presence ever since.

Over the years, Ms. O has done just about everything. She taught both 1st and 2nd grades, supported students as a Learning Specialist, helped keep things running smoothly in the halls and made sure the car line stayed (mostly) in order. She was also known for her unofficial—but very serious—role as the champion of good handwriting. If you had Ms. O, you knew your cursive had to be up to snuff.

Believed in Kids

But more than anything, Ms. O’Connor believed in kids. She taught them to be independent, take responsibility, and always put forth their best effort. Ms. O didn’t let kids say “I can’t”— because she believed they could and made sure they believed it, too. She wanted every student to feel confident enough to tackle any challenge, in school and in life.

That mix of high expectations and unwavering support left a mark on every student lucky enough to learn from her. Over the years, we’ve heard so many former students say the same thing:

Retirement Party

To celebrate her retirement, our staff planned a party full of surprises for Ms. O—and it was such a special day. Alumni from across the years came back to visit and say Thank You. Old friends and former staff members stopped by, and the halls were filled with photos from every stage of her incredible career. There were hugs, stories, lots of laughs, and more than a few tears. Ms. O was presented with keepsakes signed by students past and present, and we all took a moment to say what so many have felt for years: Thank you, Ms. O, for everything.

As she heads into retirement, Ms. O leaves behind a legacy that’s hard to put into words—one of strong character, deep compassion, and belief in every child’s potential. We know we’ll still see her around, but it’s her time now to relax, recharge, and enjoy the next adventure.

Congratulations, Ms. O! We’re going to miss you more than you know, but we’re so happy for you. You’ve earned every minute of this next chapter.
