The Notre Dame Academy middle school built a canoe! Thanks to a grant opportunity from CSCOE and Urban Wilderness, this hands-on learning opportunity came to life within our middle school science classroom.

Enjoy this article from the Sun Sailor recapping our week long building process. In the article, Mr. Dargis shares how our students were able to build the canoe sans power tools, by steaming, tying and planking the wood. Younger grades stopped by throughout the week to share in the excitement too. It was an incredible few days at school for Lions of all ages, as each day brought a new step in the building process.

Our gratitude goes out to CSCOE and Urban Wilderness, their instructors were excellent at teaching the students wood-making skills and they were very patient instructors. We enjoyed watching the students gain confidence and share their pride during this boat build.

Don’t forget to watch for the canoe on our silent auction at Grand Beginnings, May 2!
