Winter Activities at Notre Dame Academy
Winter can be long and cold here in Minnesota, and kids can get squirrely. At NDA, we have a variety of winter sports and activities to keep our kids engaged and moving their minds and bodies until the warmer weather makes an appearance. Our activities and sports are powered by a dream team combination of parents and teachers. NDA has a long legacy of sports and academic clubs winning awards over the years.
Winter Basketball
NDA has girls and boys basketball teams for grades 4 and above. Based on how many kids want to participate, we create teams each year. For the ‘24-25 season, we have six teams. The NDA teams play against other local Catholic schools in the area, which gives us a great opportunity to meet other Catholic school students. Each of our teams are led by parent coaches and the league is overseen by Mr. Tesch, our Gym teacher and Athletic Director at NDA. Parents and students alike show up to cheer on our players.
Chess Club
For students looking to exercise their minds this winter, the NDA Chess Club is the perfect choice. Open to grades K-8, this club teaches kids the fundamentals of chess through friendly games and strategy planning sessions. Whether your child is a beginner learning how to move the pieces or an experienced player looking to sharpen their skills, the Chess Club offers something for everyone. It’s a great way for students to challenge themselves, improve their problem-solving abilities, and bond with peers over the timeless game of chess.
Middle School Musical: Aladdin Jr.
One of the most highly anticipated events of the winter season at NDA is the Middle School Play. This year our talented 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will bring the magic of Disney’s Aladdin Jr. to life on stage. From the vibrant costumes to the unforgettable songs, the production is a true celebration of the performing arts. Students work together to learn lines, choreography, and music, fostering teamwork and confidence along the way. Parents and families look forward to this event every year as a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the theater and support their children’s creativity.
Fly Tying Club
Fly Tying Club is a more recent addition to our winter activity line-up. Mr. Weeres introduced the art of fly tying to his fourth grade class during the pandemic, and it was such a hit that kids and parents requested that it become an extracurricular activity so students could continue the experience after they leave fourth grade. Every Friday morning through the winter, NDA fishing fans gather in Mr. Weeres’ classroom for doughnuts and continue building the skills they need to become expert fly tiers.
Winter Spirit at NDA
At Notre Dame Academy, we believe winter is a time to come together as a community and make the most of the season. Our winter sports and activities are designed to keep students active, engaged, and connected, whether they’re dribbling a basketball, mastering chess strategies, performing on stage, or sledding with friends. We’re proud to offer a wide range of opportunities that cater to diverse interests and help our students grow both academically and personally. Winter at NDA isn’t just about staying warm—it’s about thriving together.
